This is one of my most prized creations, one of my early works. I did this when I was five years old in my Kindergarten class. I still have a pretty good memory of it. The teacher asked us to draw a picture of what we would like for Christmas. I wanted Strawberry Shortcake! And I remember running out of room when I did her hat because it was the edge of the paper. I am a compulsive planner, so even at that age they did not tell me what the intentions were, so I did not have a chance to plan out the space on the paper and I did not know it would be used for a needlepoint. I also remember being the last one finished all the time, because I just spend too much time on creating. Nothing has changed 30+ years later!
I don’t remember learning the stitches or how they showed me to do this, but somehow I knew or figured it out. And I was the last one finished. I remember all the other kids were back in front of the teacher and another was nicely urging me to finish. It was a little stressful but its what I do so I finished. And it was the best in class. I just remember other kids drawing things very simple and doing a good job too, but I went crazy with my little drawing so it took longer. It felt so good to receive the praise that I was not expecting. And in the end it was worth it.
I left that school in second grade because my parents moved a lot, but I happened to return in fifth grade and my teacher was still there. She excitedly asked me if I still had this needlepoint and I sure did, and brought it in to her to show the other students as an example years after I had made it. So fun! It was a really good feeling being the example art years later! And my Mother had it framed for years so the edges are permanently folded. I will have to find a frame for it again and hang it up!
Now I have a daughter who is eight, and she is also a very talented artist. But I tried needlepoint with her when she was five and it did not come out like this. So I understand the excitement from my Kindergarten teacher at the level of skill on this needlepoint. I thought this would be fun to share, art from my youth! I still love Strawberry Shortcake. 😀
